Egress Requirements Are the Most Important Rule

For a sliding window to qualify, it must meet all four criteria at the same time:
  • A net clear opening of at least 5.7 square feet (5.0 square feet for grade-level bedrooms)
  • A minimum clear height of 24 inches when open
  • A minimum clear width of 20 inches when open
  • A maximum sill height of 44 inches above the finished floor
The window must also be operable from the inside without keys, tools, or special knowledge.
